AAL 2018 Call for Proposals: “Smart Solutions for Ageing Well”

The call for proposals has been launched.

Under the leadership of the CIHR eHealth Initiative, CIHR Institute of Aging in partnership with CIHR Institute of Health Services and Policy Research is a member of the Active and Assisted Living Programme (AAL) | ICT for ageing well - an international consortium of 27 partners in 21 countries, which aim to enhance the quality of life of older people and strengthen the industrial base globally through the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). This collaboration provides Canada an opportunity to engage diverse communities in generating transformative eHealth solutions. AGE-WELL Network of Centres of Excellence and Mitacs are also key Canadian partners in this initiative.

CIHR is pleased to announce that it will make funding available to support Canadian researcher interested in developing ICT-based solutions targeting any AAL domain, with a focus on specified markets through multilateral collaborations.

Online matchmaking platform

The platform becomes available upon registration (see section called Partner Tool – Register Now!). The name of each attendee becomes visible in the registration process and can be contacted by other participants for a one2one meeting. Subsequently, each attendee will receive its own personalised agenda with the sessions to which she or he has registered and the name of the people to meet.

Full application

Of note, abbreviated CIHR ResearchNet applications will be required at the Full application stage. It is anticipated that the CIHR Funding Opportunity will be available on ResearchNet in March.

Funds available

The total Canadian amount available for a Canadian applicant for this funding opportunity is $353,000 (CAD), enough to fund approximately one (1) grant. This represents up to $117,666 (CAD) per year for a maximum of three years. This amount may increase if additional funding partners participate.

Important Co-Fund Requirements

The rules of the call for proposals will require that each Collaborative projects be carried out by consortia composed by at least 3 organizations from 3 different countries including an end user organization and a business partner. For Canadian investigators, this means you much establish/partner with researchers from at least two other consortium partner countries (excluding Canada and listed below) and have one eligible business partner and one eligible end-user organization (either from Canada or from a country listed below).

Call Topics

The aim of this call is to support innovative, transnational and multi-disciplinary collaborative projects with the following key features:

  1. developing ICT-based solutions targeting any application area(s) within the AAL domain, with a focus on specified markets.
  2. flexibility regarding the scope, size and duration of the proposed.

Collaborative project proposals must demonstrate a clear route to market and added-value for the different types of end-users. The solutions need to be embedded into the strategies of the participating end-user organizations, service providers and business partners. The wishes and aspirations of older adults in combination with the demands from the other stakeholders involved – e.g. providers and payers - will have a critical role in shaping useful and attractive AAL solutions with a high market potential.

Background

CIHR's participation in the AAL Programme is part of the eHealth Initiative, a priority-driven initiative funded through the CIHR Roadmap Accelerator Fund, which is led by CIHR Institute of Aging and CIHR Institute of Health Services and Policy Research. Under this initiative, CIHR has developed the eHealth Innovations Initiative (eHII) with the aim of developing, integrating and evaluating eHealth innovations, in collaboration with stakeholders that will improve the quality of outcomes and the cost-effectiveness of patient and population-centered care.

Eligibility

For an application to be eligible:

  1. The Nominated Principal Applicant must be an independent researcher.
  2. The Nominated Principal Applicant must be appointed at an eligible institution (See Institutional Eligibility Requirements for eligibility process and associated timelines).
  3. Canadian industry partners and/or end-user organization are encouraged and welcome to partner with an eligible Nominated Principal Applicant or with researchers based in one of the countries listed in the important co-fund requirements section.
