Scientific Director, CIHR Institute of Population and Public Health
Message from the President

June 28, 2022

After six years as Scientific Director of CIHR's Institute of Population and Public Health, Dr. Steven Hoffman is moving on to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).

Effective July 1, 2022, Dr. Hoffman will take on the position of Vice-President, Corporate Data and Surveillance Branch at PHAC where he will bring a wealth of expertise and experience in supporting the Government of Canada's efforts to provide timely and credible public health data.

Under Dr. Hoffman's leadership, there have been significant accomplishments in his Institutes' priority areas: Healthy Cities, Equitable Artificial Intelligence, Global Health Policy, and capacity-building across its broad mandate of population and public health.

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the field of population and public health in many ways and Dr. Hoffman led IPPH in addressing the many challenges through research, intersectoral partnerships and collaboration across all levels of government within Canada and around the world. This included the UN Research Roadmap for the COVID-19 Recovery which is now guiding major investments in research that will support the global recovery from the pandemic and help build a more equitable, resilient, and sustainable future.

On behalf of CIHR, I would like to thank Dr. Hoffman for his many contributions and wish him success at PHAC and beyond.

While the process to appoint a new Scientific Director will be launched this fall, the ongoing activities of IPPH will be supported by Dr. Christian Baron, Vice-President, Research – Programs.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Strong, MD, FRCP, FCAHS, FAAN
President, CIHR
